Dr Watson assists with Centre for History projects on forestry. She will also contribute to the Centre’s degree course. Before becoming a freelance writer and historian in 2006, Dr Watson was a senior lecturer in History at the University of Stirling and Director of the AHRC Research Centre for Environmental History. Dr Watson is the author of numerous articles and three books: Scotland: A History, (Stroud: Tempus Publishing), 2000, 2001. 2002, 2009; Under the Hammer: Edward I and Scotland, 1296-1305 (East Linton: Tuckwell Press) 1997, 2005, 2008; with T.C. Smout and Alan R. MacDonald The Native Woodlands of Scotland: An Environmental History, 1500-1900 (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press), 2005. At Stirling she generated over £1.5 million in grant income. At various points over the last ten years, Dr Watson has been: managing editor of Environment and History; UK representative to the European Society for Environmental History; Member of Council, Worldwide Fund for Nature (Scotland); Organiser of the Woodland History Discussion Group; member of the Medieval or Later Rural Settlement steering group organised by Historic Scotland; member of the Historical Landscape Assessment Steering Group organised by the Royal Commission for the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland and Historic Scotland; member of the Scottish Records Advisory Council. She is currently a Director of Dunfermline Heritage Trust and is working on a biography of the real Macbeth.
